How to Measure Steering Cable Length
Cable length is the specification most often ordered wrong. Measure the actual routed path from the helm to the engine tilt tube, not the straight-line distance, and follow the route the cable will take around the console, along a stringer, and through the transom. Add slack for a gentle bend at each turn, since a cable forced into a tight radius binds and makes the wheel stiff. When a measurement falls between two sizes, order the longer one: excess cable can be routed in a wide loop, but a short cable cannot be stretched.
