The Victron Smart BMS CL 12/100 manages 12V LiFePO4 Smart batteries charged by a 12V alternator, monitoring individual cells.

CL designates the current-limited version, which is what makes this right for an alternator installation. A lithium bank will accept everything an alternator can produce, and an alternator running flat out for hours overheats and fails. Limiting the current protects the alternator rather than the battery.

It monitors individual cell conditions rather than the bank voltage as a whole. Cells drift apart with age, and a pack reading correctly at the terminals can have one cell being over-charged every cycle without anything at the panel showing it.

The alternator, other charging sources and DC loads can each be disconnected on low cell voltage, high cell voltage or excessive temperature. Those three conditions are what damage LiFePO4 permanently, and acting on each separately is more useful than a single cutoff. Explore more battery management systems.
