Victron Orion-Tr Smart 12/12-30A DC-DC Charger

The Victron Orion-Tr Smart is an isolated 12V to 12V DC-DC charger rated 30A, with built-in Bluetooth.

Isolated is the distinction from the non-isolated Orion-Tr, and it matters on specific hulls. Input and output are electrically separated rather than sharing a common negative. That is required on steel and aluminum hulls, and on installations where the engine and service grounds must stay apart to avoid galvanic corrosion. On a standard fiberglass boat the non-isolated version is usually fine and costs less.

The wide operating range holds controlled charging where smart alternators, long cable runs or voltage drop would otherwise leave the service bank permanently undercharged. That undercharging is gradual and invisible until the bank fails early, and a DC-DC charger replaces a simple combiner on modern engines for that reason.

Bluetooth through VictronConnect gives live operating data, settings, warnings and firmware updates without physical access to the unit. Both lead-acid and lithium are supported, units can be paralleled for more capacity, and engine-running detection stops the starter battery being drawn down after shutdown.
