Description

The Victron Orion-TR 12/48-8A Isolated DC-DC Converter steps 12V up to an adjustable 40-60V output, at 8A continuous.

Eight amps looks low until the direction is considered: this steps voltage up, so the 12V side draws roughly four times the output current. Eight amps at 48V means over 30 amps drawn from the 12V system, and that is what limits the rating rather than anything on the output side.

Stepping up suits communications equipment, a 48V subsystem or telecoms gear on a 12V boat. Those are the usual reasons for needing 48V where the rest of the vessel runs at 12.

Output is adjustable 40 to 60V with 48.2V nominal, from a 10 to 17V input. Continuous output is 8A at 40°C, with around 430W at 25°C falling to 380W at 40°C, and isolation separates the two sides electrically. Explore more DC-DC converters and power supplies.

  • Steps up, so the 12V side draws four times the output
  • 8A at 48V means over 30A from the 12V system
  • That input current sets the rating
  • For communications or telecoms gear on a 12V boat
