Newmar ERC-12-35 Emergency Backup Relay Charger

The Newmar ERC-12-35 Emergency Relay/Charger switches critical 12V equipment to a standby battery when the normal supply fails.

A fast-acting relay transfers the load the moment supply voltage is lost, then transfers back when it returns. Speed is what matters: communication equipment that reboots has lost its settings and its channel, so the changeover has to be quicker than the equipment notices.

It also disconnects the backup battery from the equipment once the primary supply is back. That prevents the standby battery being slowly drained by the loads it exists to protect, which is how an unmanaged backup fails when it is finally needed.

During normal operation a small portion of supply current keeps the standby battery charged. So the backup maintains itself rather than depending on someone remembering to check it, which on a rarely used battery is the difference between working and not.
