Description
The C. Sherman Johnson Small Chain Snubber combines a Captain Hook chain claw with a pre-spliced three-strand nylon line for reducing strain on the windlass and securing the anchor chain. While anchored, the hook can be clipped to the chain and the nylon line led to a deck cleat or Samson post so the windlass is not carrying the working tension. The same assembly can be used on deck to hold the chain firmly in the bow roller while the boat is underway. It can also be rigged at the roller and pulled back to relieve load from the windlass before the anchor system is left under tension.
The included nylon line is 12 ft long and 1/2 in diameter, giving it useful stretch for snubbing shock loads at anchor. Its eye is professionally spliced to provide a finished connection rather than a knot at the hook. The Captain Hook shape is intended to engage the chain quickly while remaining easy to remove when the load is taken off. The manufacturer emphasizes that the bitter end of the anchor chain must remain secured in the windlass whenever the snubber is being used.
- 12 ft of 1/2 in three-strand nylon line
- Professional eye splice is supplied on the line
- Can unload the windlass while anchored or underway
- Hook can secure the chain in the bow roller during passage
Rig the nylon line to a strong deck cleat or Samson post so the snubber load is carried by structure intended for anchoring loads. Keep the chain itself secured independently and remove load from the hook before attempting to disengage it.
