Blue Sea's guidance on continuous use is worth following: a shunt run continuously should not exceed about two-thirds of its rated current. So a 200A shunt suits a circuit that normally sees up to around 130 amps. Sizing it to the peak instead leaves no margin and the measurement drifts as the shunt heats.
