Description
The Blue Sea Systems 7049 is a 200 amp panel mount breaker from the 187 Series, using a thermal bi-metal blade, rated to 48 volts DC.
A thermal bi-metal blade responds to heat rather than magnetic field, which makes it tolerant of the brief surges a motor draws on starting. A magnetic hydraulic breaker of the same rating would nuisance-trip on those surges, so the mechanism choice matters as much as the amperage.
Interrupt capacity varies with system voltage: 5,000A at 12V DC, 3,000A at 24V DC and 1,500A at 42V DC. That is worth checking rather than assuming, since a breaker adequate at 12 volts has considerably less margin at 42.
The large lever indicates trip status by its vertical or horizontal orientation, readable across a compartment rather than needing a close look. Terminals are 5/16 M8 studs torqued to 75 in-lb with clearance for heavy gauge lugs, the operating range runs -40°C to 85°C, and it is waterproof and ignition protected. Explore more marine circuit breakers.
- Thermal bi-metal tolerates motor starting surges
- A magnetic breaker would nuisance-trip on those
- Interrupt capacity drops as system voltage rises
- Lever orientation shows trip status across a compartment
