Description
The Blue Sea Systems 8255 is a 500A digital meter shunt with a 50mV output, for compatible digital ammeters and battery monitors.
This is the shunt Blue Sea's Shunt Shifter works with, so an installation needing positive-side current measurement starts here. Alternator output monitoring is the usual case for that, and pairing any other shunt with the Shifter will not work.
The heavy circuit current passes through the shunt while the meter reads only the small proportional voltage it develops. That lets the display sit at the helm with the shunt staying close to the battery, so no large cable is routed to the panel and back.
Blue Sea recommends shunts in continuous service not normally exceed about two-thirds of rated current, so 500 amps suits a circuit normally seeing around 330. Sizing to the peak leaves no margin, and a shunt running near its limit heats enough to affect the reading. Explore more marine electrical meters.
- The shunt the Shunt Shifter works with
- Needed for positive-side alternator measurement
- Run continuously at about two-thirds of rating
- 500A suits roughly 330 amps in normal use
