The Smith & Wesson Border Guard has a 4.25-inch stonewashed 7Cr17 high carbon stainless blade with a partially serrated edge, a stainless handle and an extended tang, closing to 5.5 inches.

At 5.5 inches closed with a 4.25-inch blade, the Border Guard is one of the largest folders Smith and Wesson builds, and it is sized for a belt or jacket rather than a trouser pocket. An all-stainless handle with no scales means nothing to crack or come loose, at the cost of the weight steel adds at this size.

The edge is split, plain toward the tip and serrated nearer the handle, putting the teeth where the hand pushes hardest on rope and webbing. 7Cr17 is a high carbon stainless that holds an edge better than plain stainless while resisting rust, and it sharpens back on any stone.
