The Samlex SDC-23 is a non-isolated DC-DC converter stepping 24V down to a regulated 13.8V, at up to 20 amps.
Twenty amps sits between the 12A and 30A converters in the same series. Sizing to the actual 12V load matters, since an oversized converter costs more and draws idle current for capacity that will never be used.
High-efficiency switch-mode circuitry reduces wasted power and heat. Heat is the practical constraint on a converter in an enclosed space, and an efficient unit needs less ventilation around it than a less efficient one of the same rating.
