Description
The Ronstan Professional Rope Splicing Tool Kit is a compact rope-work kit for sailors and riggers who splice a range of double-braid, hollow-braid, three-strand line, and twine. It includes five Selma-style fids in graduated sizes, so one set can handle several common rope constructions instead of limiting the rigger to one diameter. The polished stainless surfaces are intended to pass through line cleanly without rough edges catching fibers. For a boat owner who maintains running rigging in-house, the kit covers many of the everyday splicing jobs encountered on halyards, sheets, and control lines.
The included fid sizes are 4, 5.5, 7.5, 10, and 13mm. Ronstan lists the set for double-braid and hollow-braid line from 1/8 to 9/16 in. It can also be used with three-strand line or twine up to 1-1/8 in, which gives the kit a wider range than a small-line needle set. Because the tools are stainless and smoothly finished, they are easy to wipe clean before being returned to the rigging box.
- Five graduated stainless-steel fids
- Handles double-braid and hollow-braid line
- Also suitable for larger three-strand line and twine
- Polished surfaces help protect rope fibers
Choose the fid size to match the rope construction and the splice instructions supplied by the line manufacturer rather than forcing an oversized tool through the braid. Marking the bury and taper points before opening the rope will usually produce a cleaner result than trying to judge the splice while pulling the fid. Keep the polished surfaces free of burrs so they do not pick strands or damage high-performance fibers. For other sailboat rigging tools and hardware, browse more Sailing Hardware.
