Description

The OTTER-Messer Mercator Black Cat has a 3.5-inch stainless blade, a black metal alloy handle with a bail and the Mercator tang stamp, closing to 4.25 inches.

The Mercator has been made in Solingen since 1867, and the cat stamped into the handle is where the Black Cat name comes from. German soldiers carried the pattern through both world wars. This is the stainless version rather than the traditional carbon, trading the keener carbon edge for a blade that needs no drying and will not darken.

The handle is a single sheet folded around the blade with no scales or liners, which is what makes the knife flat enough to carry like a coin. The bail lets it hang from a lanyard, and the tang stamp is how collectors identify a genuine Solingen example. Explore more Traditional Knives.

  • Folded sheet handle sits exceptionally flat
  • Stainless version needs no drying, unlike carbon
  • Bail for lanyard carry
  • Mercator tang stamp, made in Solingen since 1867
