Description

The OTTER Mercator in brass has a 3.5-inch carbon steel blade with a folded brass handle. Made in Germany.

The Mercator has been made in Solingen since 1867 and this is the brass version of the pattern that German soldiers carried through both world wars. The cat stamped into the handle gives it the Black Cat nickname. The handle is a single sheet of brass folded around the blade, with no scales or liners. That construction is why the knife is so flat, and brass adds a weight and warmth the steel version does not have, developing a patina with handling.

Carbon steel takes a very fine edge and sharpens with little effort, though it will darken over time and should not be stored wet. Explore more Traditional Knives.

  • Folded brass handle has flat and develops a patina
  • Carbon steel takes a fine edge easily
  • The Solingen pattern made since 1867
  • Traditional lockback construction
