Description

The OTTER Messer Small Mercator has a 2.88-inch satin stainless blade with a black-coated stainless handle, held by a slip joint. Made in Germany.

The Mercator has been made in Solingen since 1867, and the cat stamped into the handle gives the pattern its Black Cat nickname. German soldiers carried it through both world wars, and the shape remains recognized today. This is the small version in stainless rather than the traditional carbon, trading the keener carbon edge for a blade that needs no drying and will not patina.

The handle is a single sheet of steel folded around the blade with no scales or liners, which is what makes the knife so flat that it disappears in a pocket. Explore more Traditional Knives.

  • Folded sheet steel handle has exceptionally flat
  • Stainless version needs no drying, unlike carbon
  • 2.88-inch blade in the small Mercator size
  • Made in Solingen, the pattern dating from 1867
