Description

The OTTER-Messer Scraping and Carving Knife has a 1.75-inch satin-finished carbon steel blade with a wood handle, measuring 6.875 inches overall.

The short blade in a long handle is the whole design. Carving and scraping need the hand close behind the edge for control, and a long handle gives leverage for pushing a cut through wood without the blade flexing. Carbon steel is the traditional carving choice because it takes a far keener edge than stainless and comes back on a strop in seconds, which matters when an edge is touched up many times in a session.

OTTER-Messer has worked in Solingen since 1840, and this pattern belongs to the plain German working tradition rather than to decorative cutlery. The blade will darken with use as carbon steel does, and most carvers let that patina develop since it slows further corrosion. Explore more Wood Carving Tools.
