The Higonokami Folder has a 3-inch satin blue paper steel blade, a folded brass handle, an extended tang and a lanyard hole, closing to 4.25 inches.

Blue paper steel is a Hitachi carbon steel, named for the color of the paper the mill wraps it in rather than anything about the steel. It is high carbon with chromium and tungsten added, and it takes an extremely keen edge while staying tougher than the plainer white paper steel. That steel in a knife at this price is the reason to look at it.

The handle is a single sheet of brass folded around the blade, with no scales, liners or springs. There is no lock: the extended tang, called the chikiri, is pressed with the thumb to hold the blade open. Higonokami knives have been made in Miki, Japan since the 1890s to essentially this design, and brass develops a patina with handling. Explore more Traditional Knives.
