Description
The C. Sherman Johnson 3/16 in Jaw-to-Swage Turnbuckle combines a traditional open-body adjuster with a jaw on one end and a swage terminal for the wire on the other. It is designed for 3/16 in wire, giving a conventional standing-rigging connection where one end pins to a chainplate or toggle and the other is permanently swaged to the stay. The open-body format makes the threaded adjustment easy to see while the rig is being tuned. Its classic layout is familiar to installers working on sailboat stays and shrouds.
The body is forged silicon bronze, while the terminal ends are T-316 stainless steel. That combination is commonly used in traditional turnbuckles because the dissimilar thread materials help reduce galling during adjustment. The jaw uses a 1/4 in pin, and the fitting provides 3 in of adjustment travel. Those dimensions should be matched against the existing chainplate geometry and required stay length before swaging the terminal.
- Jaw-to-swage layout for a direct standing-rigging connection
- Swage terminal sized for 3/16 in wire
- 1/4 in jaw pin
- Three inches of adjustment travel
Because the swage end becomes permanent once installed, final wire length should be confirmed before the terminal is pressed. The open threads, jaw pin, and swaged connection should all remain part of routine rig inspection. Browse more Sailing Hardware for compatible hardware and related marine rigging components.
