Description
The C. Sherman Johnson Handy Lock Jaw/Jaw Turnbuckle uses a compact locking lever instead of cotter pins or check nuts to secure the adjustment. The design lets the sailor flip the lever up, make the required turnbuckle change, and flip it back down to lock the setting. That eliminates loose cotter ends and sharp protrusions that can snag lines or damage sails around a busy rigging area. The fitting is useful anywhere an easily adjusted traditional turnbuckle is preferred but quick locking is valuable.
The 01 Series design uses a 1/4-28 thread and is rated by the manufacturer to an approximate 2,500 lb breaking strength. Its jaw-to-jaw format provides pinned connections at both ends so it can be integrated between compatible rigging fittings. Because the lock is built into the turnbuckle, there are no separate check nuts to tighten after adjustment. The compact arrangement has remained in the Johnson line for many years because it combines tuning access with a positive mechanical lock.
- Flip-up lever unlocks the turnbuckle for adjustment
- Flip-down action secures the setting without cotter pins
- Jaw fittings provide pinned connections at both ends
- Low-profile lock avoids sharp exposed retaining hardware
After tuning, make sure the locking lever is fully seated and that adequate thread remains engaged inside the body. The jaws, pins, threads, and locking mechanism should all be included in regular standing-rigging inspection.
