Description
The Victron VDI-32A Galvanic Isolator blocks low-voltage DC current in the shore power grounding conductor, potted for waterproof protection.
Shore power connects a boat's ground to every other boat on the dock, and small voltage differences between them drive current through the underwater metals. That is what eats propellers, shafts and outdrives on a boat left plugged in. The corrosion is slow, invisible until hauled out, and expensive by the time it is found.
Anti-parallel diodes block that low-voltage galvanic current while still letting higher fault current pass through the shore-ground path. So the AC grounding system keeps its safety function. An isolator that simply disconnected the ground would be dangerous rather than merely ineffective.
One thing to check before ordering: this model is not ABYC A-28 approved. Where an installation must meet that standard, a different isolator is needed. It installs directly in the shore power grounding path behind the 120V or 230V connection. Explore more battery charging accessories.
- Blocks the stray current that eats shafts and props
- Corrosion is invisible until the boat is hauled
- Fault current still passes, so grounding stays safe
- Not ABYC A-28 approved
