What to Look for in a Marine Starter
Select a starter by matching the engine manufacturer, engine model, horsepower, operating voltage, rotation, mounting configuration, and original equipment part number. Marine-grade construction helps withstand moisture, vibration, and corrosion in demanding engine compartments.
Confirm Fit Before You Order
Engine brand and horsepower narrow the search but do not finish it. Correct starter selection also depends on drive gear, rotation, flywheel, mounting pattern, engine family, and production year, and two engines that look identical on paper can take different starters if they fall on opposite sides of a mid-production change. Check the part number on the starter you are removing wherever it is still legible, since that is the fastest way to confirm a match.

Is It the Starter or the Battery?
Before replacing a starter, rule out the cheaper causes. Slow cranking that improves after a charge points at the battery rather than the starter. Corroded or loose battery terminals and ground straps cause more no-start calls than failed starters do, and they cost nothing to check.
