The Marbles Large Pocket Compass is a 1-3/4 inch brass compass with a revolving black face, a reproduction of the original Marbles pattern.
At 1-3/4 inches this is the large version, and dial size is the whole argument. A bigger face is read faster and more accurately, and the graduations are far enough apart to hold a bearing rather than guess at one. That makes it a primary navigation instrument where the 1 inch pocket version is a quick-check tool.
The revolving face sets a bearing that stays set, so a heading is held without recalculating each time the needle is checked.
