Silva Ranger 2.0 Orange Navigation Compass

The Silva Ranger 2.0 is a waterproof orange baseplate compass measuring 4.25 by 2.75 by 0.63 inches, with 360 degree graduation, a turnable housing and a magnifier.

A baseplate compass is the instrument for actual navigation rather than direction-finding. The clear plate lays on a map, the housing turns to set a bearing, and the result is walked rather than estimated. Romer scales at 1:24k mile, 1:25k and 1:50k read grid references straight off the map without arithmetic.

Silva invented the modern baseplate compass in the 1930s, and the red and black north-south lines on the housing are the alignment system that came from it.
