Description
The C. Sherman Johnson 5/16 in Quick Release Lever gives sailors a fast way to remove and reapply standing-rigging tension without repeatedly turning an adjuster. Its Hyfield-style over-center mechanism has been developed for high-performance multihulls and monohulls where quick rig changes can be important. A built-in positive stop keeps the moving lever from closing directly against the wire area when opened under load. The wide push surface provides better leverage for bringing the fitting back over center during setup.
The mechanism takes up 2-1/8 in as it closes and uses a quick-release pin for positive locking. Three holes in the extender arm allow the effective setup length to be adjusted before the lever is tensioned. The published approximate breaking strength is 2,500 lb. The larger pin version is useful where the mating rigging hardware is built around the 5/16 in attachment size.
- Rapid over-center tensioning for standing-rigging applications
- Positive stop helps protect hands during release
- Large push pad improves control when closing under load
- Three-hole extender provides setup adjustment
The lever can assist with catamaran shroud release during capsize recovery and can simplify forestay handling on trailerable sailboats. Check the quick-release pin and all pivot points before sailing, especially after repeated rigging and de-rigging cycles.
