The Blue Sea Systems 8246 AC Analog Micro Ammeter reads AC current through an included clamp-on current transformer, using a simple two-wire connection.

The current transformer slips over the conductor being monitored rather than being wired into it, so the main AC cable is never broken or rerouted. That is the practical advantage over a shunt-based meter. Adding current monitoring to an existing AC panel means clamping around a wire rather than cutting into it.
