BEP Marine 720-MDO Optical Sensor Battery Switch

The BEP Marine 720-MDO is a remote-operated battery switch with an optical sensor, rated 500A continuous and 2,500A cranking, working from 9.5 to 32V.

The optical sensor is what makes this different from the rest of the 720 family. It isolates the main contacts from the control circuit, so the switch can control a higher-voltage circuit from a different supply. That allows a 36V or 48V thruster to be switched from a 12V house system, which a conventional switch cannot do without a separate relay arrangement.

Mounting the switch near the battery and controlling it remotely shortens the high-current cable run, cutting copper cost, weight and installation labor. On a bow thruster that saving is substantial, since the alternative is running heavy cable the length of the boat to reach a helm-mounted switch.

The switch installs in either the positive or negative line and draws very little current on standby. LED status indication shows its state remotely, and a manual override satisfies CE and ABYC requirements.
