The BEP Marine 717 battery distribution cluster serves twin-outboard installations with port and starboard starting batteries and a house bank.
The arrangement lets both engines contribute charge to the house bank while keeping the two starting batteries separate from each other and from the house. That separation is the point. Sharing a starting battery with house loads is how a boat ends up unable to start after a night at anchor.
When the port voltage-sensitive relay engages, the port engine charges its own starting battery and the house bank. The starboard side works the same way independently. With both engines running, the house bank takes charge from both alternators until the engine voltage regulators take over.
The house bank keeps charging on one engine alone, which matters on a twin that runs single-engine for economy or after a fault.
