Description
The BEP Marine 714 Dual Bank battery distribution cluster serves single-engine boats with two banks, using a dual-sensing voltage-sensitive relay.
The dual-sensing arrangement is what makes this different from a simple two-bank cluster. Whichever bank the selector chooses becomes the sensing battery, and the other is charged through the relay. Move the selector to position two and the roles swap. Battery two becomes primary and battery one takes charge through the relay instead.
That means one bank stays isolated as a reserve while still being recharged automatically whenever the engine runs. The alternative arrangement, simply disconnecting a reserve battery, leaves it slowly self-discharging and flat by the time it is needed.
Preserving a properly charged reserve is the safety argument here, and it matters most on a boat that depends on starting reliably a long way from help.
