Fast shipping from Georgia
The BeaverCraft Bushcraft Carving Hatchet is 11.88 inches overall with a 5.5 inch forged 1066 carbon steel head, a 3 inch cutting edge, an ash handle and a leather belt sheath.
A carving hatchet is ground differently from a splitting axe. The edge is thinner and the bevel shallower so it slices along the grain rather than wedging across it, which is what shaping green wood needs. At 11.88 inches it is used one-handed with the hand often choked up near the head, closer to a knife than a felling tool.
1066 is a carbon steel that takes a very keen edge and comes back with a stone or a file in the field, at the cost of needing to be kept dry. Ash is the traditional handle wood because it flexes under impact rather than transmitting shock straight into the wrist, and it splinters rather than snapping clean. Explore more camping tools.
