The ARCO Zeus Alternator Shield 48V guards 48V charging systems against voltage spikes from sudden battery disconnects.

Forty-eight volt systems appear on vessels with electric propulsion or large energy storage, and the stakes are higher there. The alternators are larger, the banks hold more energy, and a replacement charging system costs considerably more than on a 12V boat. The shield is cheap insurance against a failure that is expensive in every direction.

Load dump is the specific event: the battery leaves the circuit while the alternator is working hard. That can be a BMS acting on a cell condition, a switch turned off under load, or a connection failing. None of them give warning.
