Lithium is what makes this necessary now, and the reason is the BMS rather than the battery chemistry itself. A BMS protecting its cells opens the circuit without warning. The alternator is still producing full current with nowhere for it to go, and the resulting spike destroys the rectifier diodes in milliseconds.

Installing at the alternator terminals keeps the protection path short. Distance matters on something reacting to a spike: cable inductance between the shield and the alternator delays the clamp, and the diodes fail during the delay.
