Fifty feet is the short length of 6 gauge single conductor, against the 250-foot spool for a boat with several circuits at this size. One negative return to a bus, or one grounding run, fits comfortably in 50 feet without leaving a large part-used spool.

Six gauge single conductor suits negative returns and grounding runs where the conductor does not follow a positive. That is the usual pattern on a boat, and single conductor sells in more colors and lengths than duplex for that reason.
