Fifty feet of 6 gauge green covers the main bonding conductor on a smaller boat, running the length of the bilge. That conductor ties the engine, shaft, struts, thru-hulls and anodes to a common potential, and it is sized generously because it must also work under fault conditions.

Bonding is not a current-carrying circuit in normal operation, which is what separates it from a DC negative despite both ending at something called ground. Wiring the two together, or using one as the other, creates precisely the stray current that bonding exists to control.
