Zinc is the traditional choice for saltwater use, but it isn't suited to fresh water, where it can develop a coating that stops it from working. Trim tabs sit low at the transom and take a lot of corrosion. Replacing both anodes together keeps the tabs evenly protected.

Replace anodes when they're about half consumed, and never paint them, because paint stops them from working. Clean the mounting surface to bare metal before installing so the anode makes good electrical contact.
