Shakespeare Style 393 23-Foot SSB Antenna

The Shakespeare Style 393 23-Foot SSB Antenna is a full-length whip design, running conductors the entire length of the antenna rather than relying on a loading coil partway up, and it's electrically equivalent to Shakespeare's long-standing industry-standard Style 390. That full-length conductor approach is a meaningful distinction for SSB use, where efficient radiation across the HF band depends heavily on antenna geometry rather than compact tricks that sacrifice performance for size.

Built for calm to moderate sea states, the antenna runs three 92-inch sections for a total of 23 feet, joined with chrome-plated brass ferrules, the bottom ferrule threaded 1"-14 to match Shakespeare's Style 409-R or 410-R mounting kits for either deck or side mounting. Termination happens via a side feed band rather than a top connection, a detail that matters when matching this antenna to an SSB tuner setup.

SSB communication depends on a properly tuned antenna system covering the full 2-30 MHz HF band, and this antenna's resonant frequency sits at 10.8 MHz when paired with an appropriate tuner, giving genuine long-range capability well beyond what VHF can reach, useful for offshore passages, weather routing services, and single-sideband nets that stay in range far past the horizon a VHF signal is limited to.
