The Sawmill Colorwood Hunter, sold under Rite Edge, sets a 2-inch drop point blade forged from a repurposed file with a Pakkawood handle dyed for extra color, full tang construction, and a brown leather belt sheath. Made in Pakistan.
A blade forged from an old file starts life as high-carbon tool steel rather than fresh stock, and it tends to hold an edge well once sharpened. Pakkawood is wood laminated with resin under pressure, which is what lets it take on a dyed color and still resist the swelling or cracking that plain wood can develop outdoors.
At just 5.5 inches overall, this is a small utility blade, closer to a pocket companion for camp chores than a primary hunting knife. Sawmill builds this whole line around the same idea: take an old file that's already hardened from years of shop use, and forge it into a blade instead of scrapping it. The dyed Pakkawood handle gives this particular version a bit more color than the plain versions elsewhere in the Sawmill lineup. Full tang construction on a blade this small isn't strictly necessary for strength, but it does keep the whole knife from feeling hollow or cheap in the hand the way a stick-tang build sometimes can. That's part of why no two Sawmill file-blades ever look quite identical, even within the same production run of otherwise matching handles and sheaths. Explore more Hunting Knives.
