A charge controller is not optional on a solar installation. A panel connected directly to a battery will overcharge it, and overcharging destroys a lead acid battery far faster than deep discharge does. The controller regulates that current and stops charging when the battery is full.

Four-stage charging is what separates a proper controller from a simple regulator. It runs bulk, absorption, float and equalization phases, each at a different voltage matched to the battery's state.
