Ronstan 20ST One-Speed Self-Tailing Orbit Winch

The Ronstan 20ST One-Speed Self-Tailing Orbit Winch is built for sailors who want a lightweight one-speed self-tailing winch with strong line grip and unusually simple service access. Its machined drum sits low relative to the deck, helping keep the line entry lower than a conventional tall winch installation. Power Ribs on the drum increase line grip without relying on an aggressively abrasive surface, so the sheet can be tensioned and eased with control. The self-tailing jaws accept 6 to 10mm line and keep the working tail managed while the winch is loaded.

The drum and center stem are hard-anodized aluminum, while the shaft and pawls are Grade 316 stainless steel and the axle pins are Grade 2205 stainless. Aluminum-bronze gears carry the drive loads, with self-lubricating Acetal bearings and a glass-filled nylon self-tailer completing the moving assembly. Ronstan uses a proven Andersen-style gearing layout, but the Orbit housing is arranged so routine disassembly does not require tools. Pulling the spring-loaded release latch and rotating the self-tailing arm allows the arm and drum to lift away from the center stem for cleaning or service.

The winch has a 2.7:1 gear ratio and an 18.3:1 power ratio, with a listed maximum pulling load of 550kg. Its base measures 120mm in diameter, the drum is 75mm across, and overall height is 124mm. The self-tailing arm can lock into eight positions in 45-degree increments, which helps align the tailing exit with the cockpit layout.
