Winch cable lives in the worst conditions on a trailer: dunked in salt water, dried in the sun and coiled under tension. Ordinary galvanized cable rusts from inside the lay where it cannot be seen or oiled. High chromium with added nickel is what resists that, and it is the difference between replacing cable every few seasons and leaving it for years.

Cable is a safety item as much as a wear item. A cable under load stores energy, and one that parts whips rather than falling limp the way a strap does.
