The Gatco Extra Coarse 80 Grit Sharpening Hone with ABS Handle is the most aggressive stage for Gatco's clamp-guided knife sharpening kits. Its job is fast metal removal, so use it to reshape a badly dulled blade, repair chips or set a new edge angle. It works on all plain edge blades.

Gatco's guided kits clamp the knife in place and use a guide rod attached to the hone, so every stroke meets the edge at the same angle. You set the angle by placing the guide rod in a slot on the clamp, then work the hone along the edge in smooth strokes. Holding one angle from stroke to stroke is what produces a clean, consistent bevel instead of a rounded edge.

Because it cuts so quickly, use light pressure and check the edge often, then move to a medium or fine hone to clean up the scratches it leaves. Keeping an extra coarse hone on hand saves a lot of time on neglected kitchen knives, axes and work blades. Add it to your kit as a replacement or an extra stage before the stones you already have.
