The Davis Solar Radiation Sensor is a silicon photo diode instrument for the Vantage Pro and Vantage Pro2.
Solar radiation on its own is a niche measurement, but combined with an anemometer and a temperature sensor it is what lets a station calculate evapotranspiration. That figure drives irrigation scheduling, telling a grower how much water the crop and soil actually lost rather than how much rain fell.
A silicon photo diode responds fast and linearly across the solar spectrum, which is what makes the calculation reliable rather than approximate.
