Description

The Balmar ARS Multi-Stage Regulator with Harness is an external voltage regulator for 12V high-output alternator systems.

A larger alternator increases available current, but without proper regulation that current is not necessarily useful or safe. An unregulated or crudely regulated high-output alternator can overcharge a bank, cook itself, or both. The regulator is what turns capacity into controlled charging.

Battery acceptance changes as state of charge rises, and a multi-stage regulator responds to that rather than applying one behavior throughout. A nearly full battery will not take high current no matter what is offered, and continuing to push it wastes fuel and gasses the electrolyte.

That is most valuable on a cruising boat with a large house bank, where charging happens against the clock. The harness is included, which removes the wiring interface as a separate sourcing problem. Explore more alternators and charging hardware.

  • Capacity without regulation is not useful charging
  • An uncontrolled alternator overcharges or cooks itself
  • Acceptance falls as the bank fills
  • Pushing a full battery wastes fuel and gasses it
