Description

The Wichard Gyb'Easy boom brake helps control the speed of the boom during a gybe, reducing the abrupt movement that can endanger crew or damage equipment. The system uses friction from the dedicated Gyb'Flex line passing through the brake to let the boom travel across the boat more progressively instead of snapping through the maneuver.

Brake effect can be adjusted by changing how the line passes through the unit and by altering line tension. Three routing positions provide different friction levels, allowing the setup to be tuned for the boat, sail area, wind conditions, and desired boom speed. The passive friction design does not require electrical or hydraulic power.

Select the correct installation geometry and Gyb'Flex line according to Wichard instructions, then test the system in controlled conditions before relying on it. A boom brake does not eliminate the need for proper gybing technique or crew awareness. Inspect the brake, line, attachment points, and routing regularly for chafe, wear, or interference.

  • Controlled friction reduces abrupt boom acceleration across the boat.
  • Multiple line-routing positions and tension settings change the amount of friction.
  • The system uses line friction rather than electrical or hydraulic power.
  • More progressive boom movement can help protect crew and equipment.
