Description

The Svord Peasant Knife has a tool steel blade pinned between two brown wood scales with the tang left long enough to grip, closing to 6.75 inches. There is no lock, no spring and no bolster, copying a design carried in Bohemia and Bavaria three or four centuries ago.

That protruding tang is both the opener and the lock. Pushing it swings the blade out, and once the knife is held the tang sits under the thumb where hand pressure keeps the blade from folding. It is the simplest working mechanism there is, and the reason the pattern outlived the centuries that produced it.

Tool steel takes a keen edge and comes back on a stone quickly, the priority on a knife meant to be maintained rather than replaced. Svord makes these in New Zealand, and at 6.75 inches closed this is a full-size working knife rather than a pocket piece. Explore more Traditional Knives.

  • Tang doubles as the opener and the lock
  • Pattern dates to Bohemia and Bavaria centuries ago
  • Tool steel takes a keen edge and strops back fast
  • 6.75 inches closed, brown wood handles
