Description
The Spyderco Byrd Gooney Serrated Gray G10 Lockback (BY24GSGY) has a 3.44-inch sheepsfoot blade with a fully serrated edge. A sheepsfoot has a straight edge and a rounded spine that falls to a blunt tip, so it is safer to use near lines, inflatable boats, and people. The serrations bite into rope, webbing, and netting that would slide off a plain edge. The fully serrated edge runs the whole length of the blade, so every inch of it bites.
The blade is 9Cr18MoV, a stainless steel with a little more carbon than 8Cr13MoV for better edge holding. Gray G10 gives a firm grip even with wet or gloved hands. A back lock holds the blade open, and the knife closes with a press of the spine bar. 9Cr18MoV is also used in many budget kitchen knives, which says something about how well it handles moisture.
Closed length is about 4.4 inches, and it has a pocket clip and a lanyard hole. Boaters, rescue workers, and anyone who cuts rope often will find this edge useful. Sharpen the serrations with a tapered ceramic rod, working each scallop individually. The blunt tip also makes it a sensible choice for cutting tape and bands on packaged goods without stabbing the contents. Plain-edge Byrd folders and more lockbacks are in our lockback knives.
