Description

The McMurdo BreakHRU is a hydrostatic release unit kit for Category 1 EPIRBs, smaller than other units available.

A hydrostatic release is what makes a Category 1 EPIRB automatic. Water pressure at around four meters releases the beacon from its bracket so it floats free and activates, even if nobody aboard is able to act. That is the difference between a Category 1 and a Category 2 beacon, which has to be deployed by hand.

An HRU has an expiry date and must be replaced on schedule regardless of condition, because the release mechanism degrades whether or not it has been immersed. An expired HRU means the beacon is not compliant and, more importantly, may not release when a vessel goes down. Explore more PFD and beacon accessories.

  • Releases the beacon automatically at around four meters
  • Works when nobody aboard is able to act
  • Has an expiry date and must be replaced on schedule
  • An expired HRU may not release at all
