The tritium insert is what separates this from a plain backspacer. Tritium glows continuously for years through radioactive decay rather than needing to be charged by light, so the knife is findable in a dark pack or tent at any hour. Luminous paint fades within hours of being charged, and tritium does not need charging at all.
