Description
The Balmar XT Series 170A Spindle Mount Alternator has an internal regulator, K6 pulley and case grounding, for single-foot mounts.
An internal regulator on a 170A alternator is unusual, and it makes this a simpler installation than the externally regulated units. No separate regulator to mount, program or wire. The trade is that the charging profile is fixed rather than adjustable for battery chemistry.
Case grounding rather than isolated ground is the other distinction, and it returns current through the engine block. That is fine on a fiberglass boat with conventional wiring. An isolated-ground alternator is what a metal hull or a stray-current-sensitive installation needs instead.
A hundred and seventy amps still brings belt and cable consequences regardless of how it is regulated. The K6 serpentine pulley and single-foot mount both have to match the engine, with 1-inch suiting Westerbeke, Lehman, Hino and Pathfinder. Explore more marine alternators.
- Internal regulator: nothing separate to mount or wire
- The trade is a fixed charging profile
- Case grounded, not isolated
- A metal hull needs the isolated version
