Description

The Balmar XT Series 170A Saddle Mount Alternator has a J10 AltMount serpentine pulley, for 3.15-inch dual-foot Hitachi-style mountings.

A hundred and seventy amps is sized for a boat where house loads consume capacity faster than a standard alternator replaces it. Refrigeration, an inverter, electronics, lighting and pumps running together can outpace a 60 or 80 amp alternator entirely, so the bank never recovers on a day's motoring.

A J10 multi-groove serpentine belt is what transmits that output without slipping. Ten grooves spread the load across a wide contact area. The K6 version of the same alternator uses six, and the existing belt decides which is correct rather than preference.

This is the alternator alone, so an external regulator and temperature sensors have to be specified separately. The 3.15-inch dual-foot Hitachi-style mount has to match the engine, and it is a different arrangement from the single-foot spindle mounts. Explore more marine alternators.

  • 170A for a boat whose loads outpace a standard alternator
  • Refrigeration and an inverter can outrun 80 amps entirely
  • J10 spreads the load across ten grooves
  • The existing belt decides between J10 and K6
