ARCO IG023 Yamaha Outboard Ignition Coil Assembly

The ARCO IG023 is a replacement ignition coil assembly for Yamaha 9.9 and 15 HP 2-stroke outboards built from 1996 through 2009. It replaces the Yamaha 63V-85570 series, including 63V-85570-00-00, 63V-85570-01-00, and 63V-85570-02-00. Sierra 18-23602 and CDI Electronics 187-0005 are listed as equivalents. It is a complete assembly rather than a bare coil, so it goes in as a direct swap for the original Yamaha part.

These small Yamaha 2-strokes are popular as kicker motors and as tiller motors on jon boats, sailboats, and dinghies. After years of vibration and damp storage, a coil can crack or lose output, leaving a motor that pulls over easily but will not start, or one that runs on only one cylinder. Check the spark plugs and plug wires first, and use a spark tester to confirm that the coil is the weak link. A motor that sat for a season with water in the cowling is a common candidate for coil trouble.

The assembly comes as a unit, so installation is mostly a matter of removing the old coil and connecting the new one in the same position. Keep the ground connection clean and tight, since a poor ground can make a good coil look bad. Route the plug leads the same way the originals ran so they do not rub against the flywheel cover or engine bracket. Start the motor and run it at several speeds afterward to confirm it fires smoothly on both cylinders.
